One gives you the familiar glow of a burning wick. The other releases fragrance by gently warming scented wax in a burner.
Neither is necessarily better for every home or every moment. Understanding how they work — and the experience each creates — can help you decide which belongs in your own fragrance ritual.
What are wax melts?
Wax melts are pieces of fragranced wax designed to be gently heated rather than burned directly.
A wax melt is placed into the dish of a suitable wax melt burner. Depending on the burner, heat may come from a tealight positioned underneath or from an electric heating element.
As the wax warms and melts, fragrance is released into the surrounding space.
Unlike a candle, the wax melt itself doesn't contain a wick. Once the fragrance has faded, the cooled wax can be removed and replaced with a fresh melt.
This makes wax melts particularly suited to people who enjoy changing their home fragrance regularly or creating a deliberate scent ritual at different moments throughout the week.
How do candles work?
A scented candle combines wax, fragrance and a wick inside a vessel.
Once lit, the flame melts a pool of wax around the wick. Fragrance from that warmed wax is then released into the room while the candle continues to burn.
Part of the appeal is visual as well as fragrant.
The movement and warm glow of a candle flame can instantly change the atmosphere of a room, making candles particularly popular for evenings, dining and slower moments at home.
They can also become decorative objects in their own right, with the vessel contributing to the styling of a space.
What's the main difference between wax melts and candles?
The fundamental difference is how the fragranced wax is heated.
A candle contains its own wick and flame.
A wax melt contains no wick and instead requires a separate wax melt burner to warm it.
That seemingly small difference changes the experience.
With wax melts, the burner can remain part of your interior while the fragrance itself changes. With candles, the fragrance, wax, wick and vessel generally come together as one complete product.
For somebody who loves regularly discovering new scents, wax melts can therefore offer a particularly flexible way to fragrance a home.
Do wax melts smell stronger than candles?
Not necessarily.
Fragrance strength depends on far more than whether something is a candle or wax melt.
The fragrance formulation, amount of wax being warmed, size of the room, airflow, temperature and individual fragrance notes can all affect how noticeable a scent feels.
Some fragrances naturally feel more powerful than others too. Deep woods, amber and spice may create a very different impression from delicate florals or airy fresh notes even when used at similar concentrations.
Rather than assuming stronger always means better, consider the atmosphere you're trying to create.
A beautifully fragranced room shouldn't necessarily announce itself from the other side of the house.
Sometimes subtlety is exactly what makes a space feel considered.
How long do wax melts last compared with candles?
This isn't as simple as comparing one melt with one candle.
Candles are generally described by their approximate burn time, while the useful fragrance life of a wax melt depends on its size, formulation, burner and how long it's warmed during each use.
A wax melt can often be warmed across multiple sessions until you notice that its fragrance has become significantly weaker.
At that point, allow the wax and burner to cool completely before removing the used wax according to the burner's instructions.
With either format, it's better to follow the individual product's guidance than assume that every candle or wax melt will perform identically.
Wax melts give you more freedom to change fragrance
This is one of the things that makes wax melts particularly interesting for fragrance lovers.
A large scented candle can stay with you for quite some time.
That's wonderful when you've found a fragrance you want to live with for weeks, but sometimes you want your space to change.
Your fragrance preferences in the middle of summer might be completely different from a dark December evening.
Wax melts make that sense of discovery easy to incorporate into the home. Once one fragrance has finished, another can take its place without replacing the burner itself.

What about the atmosphere?
This is where candles have an undeniable quality of their own.

With a traditional tealight burner, you still experience the glow of a small flame beneath the wax dish. Electric burners provide another option for people who prefer a flame-free method of warming wax.
Ultimately, atmosphere comes from the entire room: fragrance, lighting, texture, music and what you're actually doing in that moment.
Home fragrance is simply one layer of it.
Are electric wax melt burners different?
Yes.
Traditional wax melt burners generally use a tea-light as the heat source, whereas electric burners warm the wax using electricity.
Both are designed to release fragrance by heating the wax, but the experience is different.
A tea-light burner provides the visual warmth of a flame, while an electric burner can provide a flame-free alternative.
Whichever style you use, make sure the burner is specifically designed for wax melts and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
What about safety?
Both candles and wax melt burners need to be used responsibly.
For candles and tealight-powered burners, never leave a naked flame unattended. Keep them on a stable, heat-resistant surface and away from children, pets, draughts and anything that could catch fire.
Electric wax melt burners should also be used according to their manufacturer's instructions and switched off when appropriate.
Never handle hot wax or a hot burner. Allow everything to cool completely first.
The specific instructions supplied with your candle, wax melts and burner should always take priority.
So, are wax melts better than candles?
It depends on what you want from your home fragrance.
Choose a candle if you love the simplicity of fragrance and flame contained within one product, enjoy the ambience of a larger flame and want a fragrance you can return to repeatedly.
Consider wax melts if you enjoy discovering different fragrances, already own a burner you love, want to change scent more frequently or enjoy the process of selecting and melting fragrance as part of a ritual.
And there's absolutely no reason a home has to choose only one.
Candles and wax melts can serve different moments.
The important thing is choosing fragrance intentionally rather than simply filling a room with as much scent as possible.
